A century of warmth and character in the heart of charming Drøbak, where artists, adventurers, and dreamers have gathered for generations.
Reenskaug Hotel has been the heart of Drøbak since the 1880s, when the charming coastal town was a favourite retreat for Oslo's artists and citizens. The hotel has preserved its original character through more than a century of careful maintenance and thoughtful upgrades.
Today, Reenskaug offers a unique blend of historic atmosphere and modern comfort. Each room tells its own story, from the legendary Parrot Room to the tranquil twin rooms overlooking the garden. Our location in the heart of Drøbak gives you immediate access to the town's charming streets, galleries, and the beautiful fjord.

"The most charming town on the Oslo Fjord"
Drøbak, Norway
In the early 1930s, a young sailor staying at Reenskaug Hotel had acquired Petra from a ship in Liverpool, where the parrot had learned to swear brilliantly in at least four languages.
When the young sailor could not settle his bill, the hotel took over Petra, who was given a permanent place at the reception desk. 'Shall it be a cup of coffee?', 'Have you paid?' were just some of the colourful phrases this character would rattle off whenever the door slammed.
Throughout history, two of Norway's greatest artists and writers have found inspiration and solace at Reenskaug Hotel. Both Edvard Munch and Knut Hamsun left their mark on the hotel's history and continue to be part of its soul.
From 1899 to 1916, Edvard Munch, creator of the iconic work 'The Scream', visited Reenskaug Hotel repeatedly and found inspiration in the peaceful atmosphere by the fjord. The hotel was his refuge when he needed to escape Kristiania and find peace.
Letter from Munch to Tulla Larsen, Drøbak 1899
“Dear Tulla! You are surely now in Drøbak – and have surely found lodgings – it cannot be difficult – It is indeed a very pleasant hotel – You say you know no one else in Drøbak! – oh yes – you do! – It would be amusing to see you again – but I am doing everything not to think of you”
— Edvard Munch, 1899
Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun stayed at Reenskaug Hotel (then called Petersens Hotel) in 1903–04 while his new home 'Maurbakken' was being built in Vestbyveien. With us, in the quiet surroundings by the Oslofjord, he completed the novel 'Dreamers' on 1 June 1904.
Letter from Hamsun to Hans Aanrud, Drøbak 1904
“It was here you got things done.”
— Knut Hamsun, 1904
